Interstate All Battery Recognizes Fire Prevention Month

Interstate All Battery Centers in Houston, Texas and Omaha, Nebraska will give away free Interstate-branded 9-volt smoke alarm batteries to customers this Thursday in recognition of Fire Prevention Month. With Daylight Savings Time ending on November 7 it’s also a timely reminder to change the batteries in home smoke alarms.

The U.S. Fire Administration reports that fires kill more than 4,000 Americans each year and injure approximately 20,000 more while U.S. fire departments respond to nearly 2 million fires each year – with three-fourths of them occurring in residences.

To help residents stay safe, Interstate All Battery Center offers the following home smoke alarm tips:

1. Do an audit of your home’s smoke alarms. If not already in place, make a plan to install them on each level of the home, especially near sleeping areas.

2. Check placement: Smoke rises, so smoke alarms should be located on a ceiling or high on a wall. Alarms mounted on the ceiling should be at least four inches away from the nearest wall, and those mounted on walls should be four to twelve inches down from the ceiling.

3. Test your alarms and be sure that they can be heard in bedrooms even when the doors are closed. If not, install smoke alarms in the bedrooms. Make sure that your kids know what the alarms sound like.

4. Replace alarms that are older than 10 years and replace any alarm that has been painted over.
